Underwater sunset sleeve with turtles and clownfish
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A full arm piece shows a sunset over calm water with palm trees on the right, and below the waterline a group of grey sharks swims above two green sea turtles. Clownfish sit among purple anemones and reddish-brown coral in the lower part of the design. The rendering is detailed and smooth, with soft blended shading on the water and sky and vivid orange, purple and teal ink on the marine life.

Day 41, and the Marguerite has finally cleared the trades. Mr Okonedo swears the sharks have been following us since Ascension, three grey shapes keeping pace off the port bow whatever the wind does. I have stopped arguing with him. Tonight the sun went down behind us as though it had been paid to, and the whole sea turned the colour of a peeled orange.

The turtles were the surprise. Two greens came up alongside at dusk, heads out, eyeing the hull as if they had an appointment with it. Nobody touched them. Cook said they were the old kind and would outlive the lot of us, which is the sort of thing Cook says once he has had his rum early.
I thought of my sister's aquarium before I thought of anything useful. She kept a pair of clownfish in a glass tank above the kitchen sink for eleven years, and when the tank cracked she cried harder over the fish than over the sink. I told her then they were only fish. Tonight I tipped a bucket of rainwater over the rail and watched a flash of orange chase it down into the dark, and I was glad of it, though I could not have said why.
Last light. The palms on the island we passed at noon have gone under the horizon, and there is only the sea and its slow shine. The captain says we make Port Stanley by Thursday if the glass holds. I will post this from there, Ruth, with the sharks still in it and the turtles and whatever else the sea chose to show us today.
