Raised-arms figure on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a person's upper back, cropped at the hair and shoulders, showing a tattoo of a simple outlined figure with both arms raised above the head. Short radiating lines surround the figure, and its legs are drawn as a single bent shape. The thin, even linework is set against pale skin in a centred composition.

The rain had been falling on Little Wendle for forty-one days when Mabel Crisp, the only town crier left, climbed onto the mill step with her bell and found she had forgotten the words.

Nobody in Wendle had heard good news since the bridge washed off. So she did what her grandfather had done in the drought of his youth: she threw both arms up, rose onto her toes, and let out a shout with no sentence in it. The rays of her shawl flew out around her like sun on a child's drawing. Old Tobias from the dye works laughed first, then the baker, then the dog.
By the afternoon the whole village stood in the lane with their arms in the air, waving at a sky that had not yet decided anything. The clouds took the hint and thinned at the edges. Nobody could say whether it was the gesture or the weather, and the council spent a week arguing about it in the schoolroom.
Mabel never did recover the words. When the bridge was rebuilt that autumn, the first thing carved into its stone was a small figure with its legs kicked out in a single bent line, arms high, and beneath it, in letters nobody could quite spell, the word for yes.
