Small Ganesha motif on the wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black Ganesha figure sits on the inner wrist, with a rounded elephant head, curling trunk and stylised body made from smooth, bold strokes. The hand is raised against a dark textured background, which gives the ink strong contrast. The image is in black and grey, with the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame.

The mould had cracked along the trunk, a hairline that ran from the ear down to the curl, and Anjali pressed her thumb into it as if wanting could close it. Her uncle had poured the plaster himself. Behind her the radio murmured cricket commentary to nobody. She fetched the old brush from the tin on the shelf, the one with bristles worn to a point, and dipped it in the black lacquer her grandmother had always mixed too thick. Grandmother had a saying about elephants and roads: the god who clears the path does not ask where you are going, only whether you have brought your patience. Anjali had found that saying irritating for twenty years and now caught herself repeating it under her breath.

She filled the crack with resin, sanded it smooth with the edge of a folded card, and then, because the day was already lost to worry, she began to draw. Not on the mould. On the back of an invoice, a small seated figure with a round head, ears like folded leaves, a trunk curling back on itself like a question someone had decided not to finish. She drew it four times before it looked right. The fifth was the one she kept.

Friday came and the hall smelled of marigolds. Her uncle ran his fingers along the repaired trunk, found nothing to complain about, and said only that the crack had made the god look thoughtful. She folded the invoice into her pocket, where it stayed until the sawdust wore through the lining.
