Cartoon cat outline on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, rounded cartoon cat with stripes along its back and simple dot features is drawn in a single black outline on the forearm. The linework is clean and even, with no shading or fill. The black and white photo shows the arm in the foreground, with a shower and toilet softly blurred behind it.

The cat had been sitting on the Hobday boy's seed trays for three weeks before anyone thought to weigh it. Nobody in Little Wenning could say whose it was. Mrs Ambrose from the post office swore it had come in through the letterbox. Father Doyle said it had the devil in its face, then fed it a sardine from his coat pocket. The cat ate the sardine, ignored the priest, and strolled out past the bus shelter with its tail straight up like a question mark nobody wanted to answer.
Tomasz Hobday, who had lost his pencil case to it twice, took a biro and drew its outline on the back of his hand every morning so he would not forget it. By September the drawing had spread to the pub chalkboard, the bus timetable and the rim of the church font, and the children started saying the cat only turned up where someone had bothered to draw it. The first frost came early that year. The round grey shape was sitting on the bread bin when the bakery opened, warm as a loaf, waiting for someone to say its name.
