Raised fist and foliage on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A raised fist with a female symbol near the knuckles sits at the centre of a wreath of vines, leaves, berries and a tied teal ribbon. Dark outlines hold soft pink, green, yellow and teal fills, with light purple shading on the fist. The design curls around the inner forearm against a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The men said the Sound was too rough for the wool boat, so the six of us loaded the bales ourselves at low water, skirts knotted at the knee and our boots full of cold. Ishbel swore at every sack and I laughed so hard I dropped a fleece in the surf. Nobody on the council had thought to ask the women who packed the clip for the mainland mills what a Tuesday-only ferry would do to the price.

Ishbel carried a petition in her oilskin pocket, two hundred and twelve names written in pencil on the back of the chapel bulletin, and she wanted it presented properly. She tied the sheets with a length of teal ribbon she had bought for the harvest bazaar and never used. On the cover she drew a clenched fist with a small female sign set near the knuckles, wrapped in a wreath of dyke-side briar, rowan berries and yellow leaves that Mrs Gillies swore were the wrong colour for the season.

The councillors would not take the bundle from her at the door. Ishbel left it on the table anyway, bow side up, and walked home to milk the cow. Three days later Hamish Lennie rang the shop phone to say the Tuesday sailing was under review and asked whether the ribbon was still needed in the office. It was. We did not let him have it back.

The ribbon still hangs in the council window, faded to the colour of wet slate. Every new clerk asks what the bow is for. Ishbel tells them it is for keeping things tied together, and then she makes them carry the bales.
