You will not believe what came through the door on Tuesday. A woman in a grey coat sat down in Mr Pascoe's chair before anyone had thought to offer her a towel, and the first thing she said was that her hair had been filling up with forget-me-nots since March. I thought it was a joke until I saw them, tiny blue heads pushing out between the strands like something coming up through frost.

Mr Pascoe took up the shears without a word. He has been cutting hair on this front since before the bandstand was repainted, and I think he has always known that some people grow things. He snipped the stems one at a time, and each bloom fell onto the cape, then lifted off it and drifted up toward the ceiling fan and hung there, turning slowly, as if it were waiting for permission.

She paid in coins and asked if she could keep the trimmings. He said the flowers were hers to decide. She left them in a heap on the marble counter, and by closing time they had gone, and the shop smelled of cut grass and rain.

I have been sweeping ever since, and I keep finding one stray blossom under the basin, perfectly pressed, as if it were looking for a way out. Come home soon. The pier is closing in the autumn and I think we should go with it, or at least see what it looks like when it leaves.
