Raised fist in a botanical wreath on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A clenched raised fist sits at the centre of a circular wreath of daisies, leafy sprigs and small blossoms, with a stem at the base that closes the shape. The fist is shaded with stippled dotwork, while the flowers and leaves use fine, crisp outlines. The tattoo is in black and grey on a forearm, photographed close up against a plain pale wall and a maroon sleeve.

Now, you'll want to know why the gate at Thornby is always wound with daisies, and I'll tell you, but sit closer, for the well is loud and my voice is not what it was.

The Reeve, Dunstan Crake, had sold the common meadow to a lord from over the hills, and by Lammas the fence posts stood in a line like broken teeth. Mother Hesper Wane gathered every woman in the parish at the gate with baskets of seed heads, bluebell bulbs and red clover. They wove a ring of them round the top bar, working their fingers through the stems, and nobody said a word.
When the men came up the lane with hammers, Hesper did not shout. She laid her palm flat against the ring, then closed her hand slowly around a daisy stalk until the knuckles whitened. The other women did the same, one by one, until the whole gate was a row of closed fists full of flowers. The hammers stopped. The Reeve's youngest boy, who had been sent to carry the lantern, looked up at his father and asked why the ladies were holding on so tight.
The fence was never built. That autumn Hesper's granddaughter ploughed the meadow and turned up bulbs still tight in their soil, and they came up blue every spring after. The boy with the lantern grew into the Reeve himself, and he never once let a hammer near that gate. So if you go to Thornby, look at the post. Somebody always has a daisy in her fist.
