Raised fist in a floral wreath on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised fist sits at the centre of a circular wreath of flowers and foliage, which forms the outline of a female symbol with a stem and cross below. The fist is shaded with fine dots and the flowers, including a daisy, a poppy and lavender-like sprigs, are drawn in fine lines with light shading. The tattoo is entirely black and grey and is shown against a dark red fabric and a pale wall.

Ines had counted the seed packets twice before the inspector arrived, and still the number came out wrong by one. Forty-one varieties of wildflower were pinned to the drying racks of the Hallam Vault, each labelled in her grandmother's looping hand, and the ledger said forty-two. Somebody had taken the poppy. She knew who, and she did not yet know what to do about it.

The Vault sat under the old ring road in what had been Sheffield, where the council had ordered every hydroponic bay sealed once the rains turned acid. The women who ran it had kept seed alive anyway, in tins and jars, smuggling out whatever the company's drones never bothered to sniff. Ines's grandmother had called it tending the wreath. Nobody outside the Vault understood the phrase, and that was the point of it.
On the third night the poppy came back, folded inside a ration wrapper with a single word scratched on it: enough. Ines read it under the lamp and laughed until her eyes watered, because it was the same word the strikers had painted on the bridge in red the week the pumps failed.
She put the poppy back in its tin, closed the lid, and went to wake the others. The fist went up on the pump-house wall before dawn, and the wreath closed around it.
