Raptor claw with Clever Girl banner
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A curved, hooked raptor claw sits in the centre of the frame, shaded in black and grey with ridged texture along its inner edge. The words CLEVER GIRL run in capitals across a scroll banner curling beside the claw, and a dark rose with red and green leaves appears at the bottom right. The skin is shown from a close, slightly angled view against a dark background.

The hen was called Mabel, and in eleven years she had never lost a feather to the fox, which my father put down to cunning rather than the wire round the run. He said it the way other men said grace. 'Clever girl,' he'd murmur, tossing her the crusts from breakfast, and she'd cock her head at him as if she knew the joke was on the fox.

The thing that changed everything came up in the net one January morning off Gullet Rock, tangled in weed and a fistful of cod. It was curved like a fishhook and ridged along one edge like a comb, black with age and as long as my hand. Dad turned it over under the lamp and didn't say a word. He wrapped it in a tea towel and put it in the drawer where we kept the spare keys, and for a week he went out to the boat alone and came back quiet.
On the eighth night the wire was torn at the corner of the run. In the morning Mabel was perched on the coal bunker, perfectly fine, and the fox was nowhere to be seen, only a long scatter of russet fur along the harbour wall and prints that ended at the water as if something had lifted it clean away. Dad stood at the gate with his hands in his pockets. He didn't look at the sea. He looked at the hen.
I took the claw out of the drawer that evening and set it on the windowsill beside the salt jar. Mabel came in through the back door, walked straight to it, and crouched over it with her feathers flat. 'Good girl,' Dad said from the doorway, very softly, and this time I don't think he was talking to the hen.
