Raptor head and rose on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A green, scaly raptor head with an open mouth and visible teeth sits above a red rose with shaded petals and dark green leaves. The linework is bold and dark, with soft shading on the dinosaur's skin and the rose petals. Red and green dominate the colour palette, and the design is arranged vertically on the lower leg with the rose at the bottom and the head at the top.

The freight clerk at Tilbury had sworn the crate held plaster casts for a museum in Valparaíso, and insisted it ride below the waterline where the cold kept things still. By the third week out, Halvard Penrose had stopped believing the clerk and started listening to the crate instead. It ticked when the swell turned, and something inside shifted its weight like a dog settling in straw.

He was the ship's carpenter, so the crate was his to check. On the night the moon hung low over the Bay of Biscay, he worked the lid loose with a chisel and a bent prayer. Inside lay a green head the length of his forearm, jaws parted, teeth ranked like the tines of a comb. Beside it, wrapped in oilcloth, was a single rose cut from a glasshouse in Kent, its petals already browning at the edges. Someone had meant the two to travel together.

He should have fetched the mate. Instead he sat on the hatch coaming and talked to the thing the way he talked to a difficult apprentice. "You're not going to Chile," he said. "Nobody's going to Chile with you." The head said nothing, but the lamp caught its amber eye, and he understood that the rose had been a bribe, or a farewell, or an apology from someone who had put it on a ship she could not board herself.

At first light he carried the rose up to the rail and let it fall into the white wake. The sun lifted out of the sea like a struck match. When he went back below, the crate stood open and the head was gone from the straw, leaving only its shape pressed into the packing. He never told the mate what had been in the hold, only that the cargo would be lighter in Valparaíso than the manifest said.
