Dinosaur skull and rose on an upper limb
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A dinosaur skull with a long jaw and visible teeth sits across the top of the design, with a second skull shape overlapping it. A full rose with layered petals and several leaves fills the lower right, and leaves extend up beside the skull. The design is built from fine outlines and dense stippled dots for shading, in black ink and grey tones on pale skin against a dark background.

The plough caught something under the Bramley row on the last Thursday in August, and Dad swore at it the way he swore at everything that wasn't a tractor. I came out with the wheelbarrow and found him on his knees, brushing soil from a jaw as long as my forearm. Teeth stood along it like the pegs on a drying line.

Nobody in the village had a word for it. The man from the county museum arrived in a grey hatchback with a clipboard, called it a theropod, then looked embarrassed when Mum asked whether that meant it had been hungry. He wanted it. Dad said it had been in the ground longer than the orchard and could stay another winter. Gran's old rose had grown up the wall of the packing shed and through the gap where the bricks had gone, and its heads hung heavy with late blooms that smelt of jam.
On the Saturday my sister and I dug it out whole and carried it between us to the back of the shed. The bones were cool and lighter than they looked, like driftwood left out in the rain. We laid it in the long grass where the windfalls rotted, and by morning there were wasps in the eye socket and a rose petal resting on the upper teeth like a tongue.
The museum man rang twice more. Dad told him it was looking after itself now. I still walk out at dusk to check, and the rose has pushed a cane through the gap where the nose used to be, its flowers pale against the bone. Dad says nothing out here is really dead, only tidier than it was.
