Red rose tattoo on the lower leg
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A red rose in full bloom, with several outer petals and a pale inner centre, is shown with dark leaves shaded in green and yellow. The design uses bold black outlines, solid red fill and soft grey shading inside the petals. The rose is centred on a smooth patch of skin against a dark blue background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Brother Anselm had been told twice already that the old rose had to come down. The mason from Hereford had run a knotted cord along the south wall of the infirmary garden, and the cord ran straight through the rose's roots. Anselm knelt in the wet bed with a trowel and dug where the mason had marked, careful of the thick grey canes that had grown up the stone for longer than the present prior had been alive.

The blooms were the colour of cooked cherries, heavy and cupped, their outer petals edged in a black line so firm it looked drawn with a quill. Where the inner petals folded in on themselves there was a pale seam, like lead come through the glass of a window. The leaves were dark, serrated, going yellow at their tips where the autumn frost had caught them. Anselm had pruned it every March for thirty-one years and had never once thought of it as anything but a nuisance that gave good hips.
He took his cuttings during Compline week, when the house was silent and the cellarer was snoring. He wrapped three pieces in damp sacking and tucked them under his scapular, and at chapter the next morning Abbot Geoffrey noticed the sap stain on his sleeve and looked at it for a long moment without saying anything at all.
In April the cord lay coiled on the bench by the gate and the new wall stood waist high, pale and square. In the bakehouse window, between a crock of salt and a loaf cooling on a board, a clay pot held three green shoots. One of them had a bud, and through the tight red skin of it Anselm could see the first colour, like an ember under ash.
