Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large raven sits on a branch, shown in profile with its head turned upward. The bird is rendered in realistic shading with detailed feather texture, while thin linework foliage wraps around it. The image is black and white, with the tattoo filling most of the upper arm and reaching onto the shoulder.

Brother Anselm had already counted the bells twice when the raven came down onto the wet yew by the cloister door, cocking its head at the lamp as if it had been sent to check his arithmetic. Matins was late. The abbot would notice. He tucked the wax tablet under his arm and stepped out into the drizzle to see what the bird wanted.

It did not want bread. It hopped along the lowest branch, shook out its shoulders, and turned its beak to the sky the way the carved bird on the lectern did, as though listening for something above the tower. Anselm had kept the brothers' ledger for thirty years and knew no bird in Ashcombe lived this long. The last one had gone the winter the mill burned. He had written that down too, in the margin, where nobody read.
The raven stayed through the office, through Lauds, through the cold ringing of the second bell that Anselm pulled himself because the lad was ill. When the sun finally cut the fog over the ferns, the bird lifted off the branch with a sound like a page turning and flew west, toward the road to the coast. Anselm found the tablet still in his hand with the hours unmarked. He drew one small black mark for the bird, then rubbed it out, because the abbot would ask what it was counting, and he had no honest answer that would fit in the book.
