Raven head tattoo on a calf

Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A raven's head in profile faces left, with a detailed beak, eye and stippled feather texture across the head and neck. Long, thin black strands trail downward from the neck, giving the bird a dripping, rooted look. The tattoo is entirely black and grey on a calf, shown in a close, slightly angled photo against a grey pavement.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The windfalls had started to rot under the Bramley trees by the last week of August, and Dad said the wasps would be bad until the first frost. I was counting crates onto the cart when the raven landed on the old pear wall, not hopping the way the rooks do but stepping down slowly, like a man testing a rotten stair.

It came every evening after that, always to the same branch of the Conference pear that Grandad had grafted before the war. Its neck was ruffed and dark, and from beneath its throat long wet strands hung almost to the grass, thin as hair. I took them for ivy at first. When I went close one afternoon they were roots, pale and fine, the kind you find when you lift a stump, and they went down into the soil beneath the tree and did not stop.

The pear had gone thin that summer, its leaves yellowing at the tips while the others stayed green. Dad blamed the dry spring. I told the raven as much, which was foolish, and it regarded me with one bright eye the way a ticket inspector regards a fare dodger. Then I noticed the pears had stopped falling, even the ones that should have dropped by now, and the strands had grown longer.

On the last evening of August I took a spade to the trunk and dug where the threads went in. There was no water down there, only a bundle of black cord, knotted and oiled, running down past the clay. I cut one. The raven gave a single hoarse call from the wall, and the tree, for the first time in weeks, let a pear fall at my feet, heavy and sweet and whole.
