Raven perched on a branch on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large raven stands side on, perched on a thin branch with its claws gripping the wood, and its head turned toward the viewer's left. The bird is rendered in black and grey with smooth shading across the feathers, sharp highlights in the eye and beak, and fine linework on the twigs. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a pale arm, with a blurred shelved background.

The boarding house on Gull Terrace has eleven rooms and one bird, and by the second week of October you have stopped asking which of them pays rent. Mrs Ashdown left you the keys, the tide tables and a ledger with the guests' names crossed out in green ink. The raven arrived on the first wet morning and took the perch above the scullery door as though it had been hired.

It watches the sea the way the landlady used to, head cocked, one pale eye steady on the grey water. When the coach from Penzance is late it hops along the hall rail and knocks the brass bell with its beak, twice, then waits for you to come. You have started leaving it crusts on the sill. Nobody else has climbed the steps in nine days except the man about the gas meter, and he would not come past the mat.
On the Sunday the bell rang with no one on the step. You found the ledger open at the last page, where Mrs Ashdown had written, in her small slanted hand, Room four, paid to the end. Beneath it a second line had been added in a different ink, scratched rather than written, as if with a claw: the bird keeps the books now.
You took the spare key up to room four. The window stood open and the raven sat on the sill, turning its head to look at you with that sharp, patient interest, as though it had been waiting for you to catch up. You checked the name beside the room in the ledger. It was your own, and the ink was still wet.
