Raven perched on a bare branch on an ankle
Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A raven sits in profile on a leafless branch that winds down the leg towards the ankle. The bird is rendered with fine feather detail and soft grey shading that gives it volume, while the branch uses thinner, darker linework. The tattoo is shown in black ink and greys against plain skin, with a dark fabric background at the top of the frame.

Dear Mags,

The bird came back to the drying lines again this morning, the same black thing that sat on the bare sycamore by the net shed all last winter and watched us gut the cod. Dad swears it's the one that took the bait tin off the bollard in March. I told him ravens don't carry grudges, they just carry things.
The fleet's lost two boats to the Dogger weather since you left. Tam Rennie's Morning Star came back with her wheelhouse stove in and nobody hurt, which is more than the gulls can say. We've been hauling short and the price at the market is a joke, so Skipper says we go out again Thursday whatever the glass says. I'm mending the second trawl net on the shed floor, knotting by lamplight, and every few hours I look up and the raven is there on the sill, turning its head as if it's reading over my shoulder.
Last night I pulled the old rope off the davit and it came away in my hand with a little bundle tied into it: your blue ribbon from the Harvest dance, the one you said you'd lost. I don't know how it got there. I've decided it was the bird, and I've decided not to argue the point with Dad.
Hold the tea for me till I'm home. Tell Ellen the crab pots are stacked by the wall, and keep the dog away from the bait.
Your Jamie
