Two birds with a sprig on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Two birds are shown in flight across the arm, one perched with wings spread and a small leafy twig in its beak, the other in a lower diagonal pose with a wing extended. The linework is fine and the feathers are shaded with dense stippling and dark masses, giving the birds a detailed, naturalistic finish. The tattoo is entirely black and grey, with a soft, uneven skin background and a dark garment and workspace visible at the edges of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The big top came down for the last time in Ludlow on Tuesday, and the wind took two tent pegs and most of our patience with it. Mr Sayer says the Hartwell Brothers are finished now, bar a few weeks of fairgrounds. I'm writing because you asked what happened to Mabel and her sparrows, and I've been putting it off.
Mabel's act was never much to look at. She'd stand in the middle ring with a tin of millet and two brown birds would drop from the rigging and sit on her wrists as if they'd been told to. Last season the crowd thinned to a few dozen on wet nights, and the bird act was the first thing the manager wanted cut. He said sparrows don't sell tickets. Mabel said nothing. She just went on feeding them.
On the last night in Ludlow, the lights failed halfway through the trapeze and we all sat in the dark listening to the rain. When the generator caught again, the far pole was empty. The sparrows had gone up into the canvas and out through the gap where the pegs had torn. Mabel was sitting on an upturned crate with a sprig of hawthorn in her lap, not crying, just holding it.
I went round the field for an hour with a torch and found nothing. But this morning there was a twig of hawthorn on my caravan step, fresh, the leaves still wet. I don't suppose it means anything. Mabel says it does.
Love, Ruth
