Raven in flight above the word Nevermore
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black silhouette of a raven in flight, with its wings spread and its head turned to the right, perched above a flowing script word. The raven has a distressed, speckled texture within its body and wings, while the lettering is drawn with smooth, tapered strokes. The design sits centrally on a pale grey, mottled background in black and grey only.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The raven had been bought from a Phoenician captain for three denarii and a jar of sour wine, and Marcus Vettius had spent the following month regretting both. It sat on the rim of its cage at the Ostia fish market, ignoring the gulls, the coins thrown at it, and the boys who mimicked its croak. Then one grey morning, with the tide turning and the nets stinking in the sun, it opened its beak and spoke in a woman's voice.

"Nevermore," it said, flat and careful, as though reading from a wax tablet. Nobody on the quay knew the word. The captain swore he had never taught the bird a thing. Marcus, who had sold salted mackerel for thirty years and knew every trick a bird could be taught, did not believe him. He sent an errand boy to ask the old wine-seller by the granary, and the boy came back pale, saying the wine-seller's daughter had sailed for Alexandria two summers ago and never written home.
That night Marcus carried the cage down to the water's edge. The raven studied him with one black eye, then unfolded its wings and launched itself over the harbour, heading west into the last of the light. He stood there until he could no longer tell it from the gulls, and he told himself it was only a bird.
By dawn it was back on the rim of the cage, feathers beaded with spray, the same as before. Marcus never sold it. Some evenings he heard it on the warehouse roof, repeating the word to the empty harbour in a voice that was not his own, and he never once answered.
