Black ink pen drawing of the Ravenclaw crest, showing an eagle over a shield with scrolling foliage and a banner reading Ravenclaw.

Ravenclaw crest pen drawing

Black and grey · Flash

A detailed pen drawing of a heraldic crest centred on an eagle with spread wings, set in front of a shield with a cross and swirling ornament. Fine linework and dense stippling and hatching build up the feathers, shading and foliage, and the leaves and scrolls frame the shield. The lettering on the lower banner is drawn in the same black ink, and the piece is entirely greyscale on white paper.

Dear Nan, the eagle came back again this morning, the big one with the grey-tipped wings, and it sat on the gantry above the winch while we hauled the second string of pots. Skipper says it's a sea eagle that follows the ferries out past the Skerries, and I said nothing, because you'd only tell me to write it down properly.

The crest is what I keep looking at. Skipper had the wheelhouse board repainted in the spring: a shield with a cross on it, scrolls and leaves curling round the edge like carving on an old pew, and the eagle in the middle with its wings thrown out as if it means to lift the whole thing off the wall. Under it runs a banner with letters cut so deep you can read them from the deck in the dark. Dad always said the boat's name was the only part of her that never needed paint.

Yesterday the bird dropped a mackerel on the deck, neat as you like, right at Tom's boots. Tom went white and says the eagle is counting us. I laughed, but I've been counting too: nineteen boats out of the harbour since August and only twelve back at the slip.

So I've left a fish on the rail for it tonight, and if it takes the fish I'll call that a yes. Tell Grandad the crest is still hanging straight, and that I'm keeping the good oilskins dry for him.
