Ravens, pocket watch and roses design

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A rendered black and grey drawing of two ravens, one in front and one behind, perched above an open pocket watch with Roman numerals and the word ETERNITY on its face. Roses and thorny vines wrap around the watch and the lower part of the design, with soft grey shading and splashes of ink across the dark background. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong contrast between the dark birds and the pale watch face.

You learn the tide before you learn your letters in Scarrow, and on the morning the Constance Mary goes out short-handed, you are the one who winds the skipper's watch. Old Tobias Lowe keeps it in his waistcoat on a chain, a silver pocket watch with a face gone the colour of skimmed milk and the word ETERNITY printed beneath the twelve, as if somebody at the factory had made a promise. It runs four minutes slow. He says it is the only honest thing aboard.

Ravens sit on the fish market roof and watch the boats come in, the way they always have, black and patient. One of them has a bent beak that has been there since you were a boy. They follow the gulls to the gutting tables and wait for the heads. Tobias says they are the fleet's accountants, counting who comes home. You laugh and bait the lines, and the ravens watch you do it.

The weather turns off the Dogger Bank. Eleven hours of grey water standing up on its hind legs. When the Constance Mary limps back through the harbour mouth at dusk with only four men aboard, a raven is already on the mast, and the watch in your palm reads a quarter past nine, the minute Tobias stopped it when the wind first came. You do not wind it. You close your hand around the cold silver and let the hour stay where he left it, because nothing more can be lost while the thing is still.
