The chapel roof had gone the winter before, so Agnes Corrie said her prayers under open sky, her palms pressed together until the silver ring on her middle finger bit into the skin. Rain came sideways off the Firth and found the gaps in her shawl. Below the broken arch, the gatehouse bell had not rung since her grandfather's time, and its rope hung in a loop like a dead eel.

Her brother Tam had gone down to the village at dusk to sell the last of the goats and had not come back. Everyone in Dunreoch said the castle took its due. Agnes did not believe the castle wanted anything. She believed the men from the estate office wanted the land, and she had been telling them so with her hands clasped in the chapel doorway for three weeks.

On the fourth night the lamp in the gatehouse flickered, and a figure came up the track with a lantern held low. It was Tam, his coat black with wet and a cut over one eye, and behind him walked a stranger in a dark velvet coat with a band of black ribbon at his throat. The stranger's eyes were rimmed with soot, and his lips were parted as if he were about to pray too. He held out a folded deed with the estate seal already broken.

Agnes read it by the lantern. It was not a sale. It was a lease for the bell rope, signed by her grandfather in a hand she knew. The stranger smiled, turned the silver ring on her finger until its pale stone faced her, and said, 'Ring the bell, and the castle will answer for you.' She rang it. Down in the village every dog began to bark at once, and far below, one by one, the windows of the estate office went dark.
