Zombie woman face on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a woman's face with grey-green, decaying skin, hollow dark eyes and a wound on the cheek. Her mouth is open and filled with red blood, with a dark object running into it. Fine shading and smooth blending give the face a photographic, three-dimensional look, set against a ragged red blood splatter.

Old Tobias Renwick kept the signal box at Carrow Halt for thirty-one years, and in all that time the 9.40 never once stopped for anyone who wasn't on the timetable. So when the platform lamp flickered one wet November night and a woman stood beneath it, grey as ash, he did not wave the train through. He took his storm lantern out onto the boards and asked her name.

She said she was waiting for the girl who had sent the telegram, and she held out the slip of paper, gone soft as cloth, the ink run into blue smears. It said only COME HOME BY THE LINE. Tobias had known the Dunmore sisters when they were children. The elder, Ada, had gone to the city to be a typist and never written again. The woman's cheek had split open at some point, and the wind whistled through it, and she did not seem to mind.

He tried to lead her into the waiting room, but she would not sit. She stood with her head tilted towards the telegraph pole, where the wire hummed in the rain. After a while he understood she was listening to it. A thin copper line ran from the pole down into the locked hatch of the old instrument, and she bent and took the loose end between her teeth, the way a child bites a thread, and the humming stopped.

The key began to tap. Tobias read the letters as they came, in a hand he knew from a dozen birthday cards: TELL TOBIAS THE LINE IS OPEN. When he looked up, the platform was empty and the lamp had steadied. The 9.40 came through without stopping, and Tobias kept the lantern lit every November after, just in case the line needed him.
