Realistic woman's face on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A photographed tattoo on the forearm shows a woman's face in close, realistic detail, with a grey-shaded eye and nose and black ink running from the eye like tears. The red lips and red drips down the lower face add the only strong colour against soft grey shading and a dark ink splash across the upper right of the design. The dark background sets the tattoo against the skin and centres the portrait.

Dear Nell,

You will think me soft, but I finished the Carlisle portrait on Tuesday and could not stop shaking afterwards. Mr Hollis wanted her for the Palais wall, the big one above the bandstand, a face the size of a door. He gave me one studio print with a crease through the forehead and told me to make her look as though she had just stopped crying. Not sad, he said. Finished with it.
So I left the eye grey and wet and let the black ink run from the lashes in long threads, the way Indian ink goes when you tip the bottle too far. The lips I did in carmine, then went over them twice until they looked bitten. The drips down the chin I took from a spoiled tin of sign-writer's red that Hollis kept for the fire exit lettering. Nobody in the hall will ever know that.
Friday night the place was full. Couples turned in slow circles under the painted face, and I watched a lad in a borrowed suit stop dead, look up, and then lead his girl off the floor as if he had been told off. Hollis came over with his hands in his pockets and said, "Well, she's watching us now." I said that was rather the idea.
Keep me a seat at the Saturday dance, will you? I'll bring the good scissors and tell you who she reminds me of, though I still haven't decided.
