Realism portraits and cat on hands and forearms

Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Several tattooed arms and hands are arranged in a circle on a brown surface. The pieces include a realistic grey cat on a hand, stacked banknotes, a woman's portrait, a rose and script on a forearm, and a skull on a lower arm, with a small coloured floral piece on one wrist. The shading is smooth and detailed in mostly black and grey ink, and the tight composition fills the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat came up the stairwell of Harrow Point the same week the lift broke for good, and nobody on the fourteenth floor could say whose it was. It was grey as wet slate, with eyes like two pennies held up to a torch, and it sat on the landing outside flat nine as if it had paid the rent.

Old Mrs Ashdown on eleven said it was a witch's cat. Dev on the sixth said it was a bailiff's, sent to count what they owed. The lads who played cards by the bins every Friday said nothing at all, but they started leaving a saucer of tinned mackerel on the bottom step, and when the saucer was empty they put down two pound coins, folded small, as if the cat might want to buy something of its own.

One night in February a game ran late and the money on the bin lid came to forty pounds short of what anyone had brought. Somebody swore. Somebody else went up the stairs to bang on a door. The cat walked down the middle of the steps between them, stopped, and sat. Nobody moved after that. Its ears went flat and then up again, and the argument left the stairwell like heat from a radiator.

In the morning the forty pounds was back on the lid, folded in quarters, with a single grey hair lying across the top note. Mrs Ashdown said that was the whole of the story and she would hear no more of it. The cat was never seen on the stairs again, though the mackerel saucer was still full each Friday, and nobody wanted to be the one to tip it out.
