Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph shows a person with their face hidden behind tattooed hands. A large rose is shaded in black and grey on the forearm, with a cup or chalice design on the back of the hand and small marks on the fingers. The shading is soft and the composition is close, with the tattooed arms filling most of the frame.

Nobody on Carrick could remember who first planted the rose against the chapel wall. It grew out of salt and stone, its hips black as tar and its petals the colour of old pennies, and the fishermen said it would bloom only for someone willing to give up a thing they loved to water it. At the wall she knelt and poured the water slowly over the roots, and the thorns lifted off her wrist as though they had been waiting to let her go. Tomas came up the path behind her, breathless, and saw the empty cup in her hands and the rose open above it, pale and dripping.

The ferry left without them that morning. By evening the cup was full of rain, and Ada had set it on the chapel sill where the gulls could drink from it, and she stopped worrying about the boat.
