Sugar skull tattoos on two fingers
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two fingers carry ornate sugar skull designs decorated with scrolls and floral motifs. The skulls are drawn with dark linework and soft grey shading in the eye sockets and across the bone structure. The close crop shows the hand against a dark background, with a silver ring on another finger.

The sugar had to be right by four o'clock or it would crack in the cold, and Nell's aunt Bridie had been saying so since the hens were let out. Frost furred the kitchen window of the farmhouse above the Tyne valley. On the scrubbed table the moulds lay in a row like teeth: small pale skulls with scrolls cut into their brows and roses pressed beneath the jaw.

Nell packed the damp sugar into each mould and tapped the shapes out onto greaseproof paper. Bridie checked them with the flat of a knife, humming, turning down the corners of her mouth whenever one came out lopsided. 'Your granddad's hands were worse,' she said. 'Could never keep a line. Used to say the bones knew the way and the fingers didn't.'
That night the power failed across the lane and the Aga was the only light left in the house. Nell lifted the last skull to the window to check the eye sockets. A rose had blurred into the brow where the sugar had slumped. She decided it would do. Bridie took it from her, pulled her cardigan tight, and pressed her thumb into one hollow eye, leaving a print like a smudge on frosted glass.
In the morning the paper was stiff and the skulls had gone hard as slate. Bridie laid them in a biscuit tin with a sheet of tissue between each one, then wrote the date on the lid in pencil, the way the family always had, so the winter would have a record of what it made.
