Black and grey realism tattoo of a man's portrait framed by a folded banknote on the upper arm.

Realistic banknote portrait on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a male portrait with long hair and a high collar, shown in a banknote design with fine partial lettering and denomination marks visible around the edges. The face and hair use smooth, detailed shading with strong highlights, and soft grey swirls surround the note to suggest movement. The image is entirely black and grey, framed tightly on the upper arm against a dark background.

The stairs in Carrow Keep give way one step before the top, so you learn to hop it with your left foot and keep your right hand on the wet stone. Tomas is already at the window slit, shielding a candle with his cap, and he does not turn round when you swear.

The plate is wrapped in oilcloth inside a niche behind the chapel altar, exactly where the old engraver's ledger said it would be. You unroll it on the flagstones. Everything is backwards, every letter mirrored, and a solemn face in a high collar looks up at you from the copper, a long curl of hair falling over one shoulder. Someone spent a winter cutting that face line by line, and then, by the look of the margins, decided it was too honest to print.

Tomas says the crown will want it back. You say the crown has had three hundred years to ask. He laughs, low, and the candle gutters. Outside, the wind swirls through the broken roof and lifts loose sheets of pulped paper from the floor, grey and curling like smoke, until the whole nave seems to be leaving with them.

You fold the plate small, the face turned inward, and slide it under your shirt where it sits cold against your ribs. At the gate, the guard lifts his lantern and asks what you are carrying. You tell him nothing, which is true. The plate is only a picture of paper, and paper is only worth what people agree to believe.
