Banknote portrait tattoo on a calf

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic black and grey tattoo shows a banknote portrait of a bald older man with long side hair, set within an oval frame and torn-edged bill border. The shading is smooth and detailed, with a grey wash behind the frame and sharp highlights on the eyes and forehead. The portrait fills the centre of the calf, with the spiked crown of a second design visible at the bottom edge.

Brother Anselm had kept the almonry ledger for nineteen years and had never once been paid in foreign paper. The bill arrived folded inside the purse of a lorry driver who had stopped at the gate at dusk, asking only for a bed and a bowl of broth. Anselm carried it to the scriptorium and held it under the lamp. The old man on it had a bald crown, long grey hair falling past his ears, and eyes that seemed to be measuring the room. Around the oval frame the paper was torn at the edges, as though someone had pulled it from a wall in a hurry.

At Compline he confessed the bill to Abbot Rhys, who listened with his hands folded inside his sleeves. "It is not ours to spend," the abbot said, "and it is not ours to refuse. Give it where it is needed." So Anselm did what he had been trained to do with anything he could not account for. He wrote its amount in the ledger, then wrote a second line beneath it, the words he used for every gift: received, given, unrecorded.

The next morning he slipped the note into the alms box beside the chapel door, between a child's drawing of a ship and a folded prayer for a sick sister. Later that week the box was emptied for the village food bank. Anselm was there when the volunteer smoothed the bill flat on the trestle table and laughed at the stern old face staring at the rafters. "Nobody in this town has a face like that," she said, and tucked him into her coat pocket to take home.
