Realistic bear and flames on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic bear sits in the centre of the design, looking upwards, with a faint animal head visible lower down on the arm. Flame or smoke-like forms rise above it and wrap around the shoulder, with feathered shading at the top left. The work uses fine greyscale shading and strong black contrast, and the two views show the same tattoo from slightly different angles.

Sit closer, the lot of you, the gas is out again on Tanner Street and I'll not shout over the wind. Hear about Old Mab's bear? She kept it in the back of the chandler's yard by the canal, chained to a post it could have snapped with one shrug. Nobody in Leeds could say where she got it. Some said a Russian, some said a fairground man who drank himself into the river.

The winter the mills burned, the sky over the Aire went the colour of a bruise and the bear would not eat. It sat on its haunches facing the glow, nose up, the way a man looks for a train that's late. Ash came down like grey snow on the cobbles. The wolf that ran with the rag-and-bone cart, a grey bitch with one ear, lay down beside it and didn't move for three nights.

Mab went to it on the fourth night with a lantern and a tin of herring. She didn't unchain it. She said, you've been waiting for the fire to come to you, haven't you, and it's not coming, love, it's never coming, it only stands there and gets brighter. The bear looked at her with those small wet eyes and, quiet as a letter sliding under a door, the chain fell open. Nobody saw the lock go. In the morning there was only a feather on the post, long and grey, and the canal smelled of woodsmoke for a week.
