Realistic butterfly on top of a foot
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A bare foot rests on a grey stone surface, with a realistic butterfly tattoo on the top of the foot. The butterfly has blue wings with purple edges, yellow-dotted borders and a cast shadow that makes it appear to lift off the skin. The shading is smooth and the colours are vivid, and the coral toenail polish sits at the edge of the frame.

Mara had been up since the third bell, and the ovens on Hallow Lane were the only warm thing for a mile. She set out the tins while the flour still hung in the air like breath. Her grandmother had always said the first loaf of the day belonged to whoever was awake to see the sky turn, and that it must never be sold, only given to someone on the road.

One grey morning a butterfly came in through the propped door, blue as a jay's egg, its edges dusted purple and dotted with gold. It settled on the stone step where the cold had gathered, and it would not lift. Mara tried a feather, then a warm crust, then her own breath. The butterfly sat with its wings open, and the shadow it threw across the flagstones was darker than a thing so small had any right to be.
Old Tobiah the carter, who came each morning for a loaf he never paid for, watched her fuss and laughed. "It is waiting to be carried," he said. "Things that lift off stone always need carrying first." She cupped her hands, but the wings only trembled and settled back, and she understood the step was not the trouble. The butterfly was waiting for the sun to clear the chimneys so it could see which way the warm air ran.
When the light finally came over the roofs, the butterfly rose, circled the oven once, and went out into the lane. Its shadow stayed on the step a moment longer, then it too was gone. Mara lifted the first loaf from the oven, broke off the heel, and left it on the stone where the wings had been. Tobiah took the rest and did not ask why she was smiling.
