A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit nearer, the fire's down to its last red, and mind the kettle, it's older than your grandmother's grandmother. Out past the ridge of Harrow Deep, when the sky still had weather in it, there was a seed house run by two women who did not speak to each other for eleven winters. Ysolde kept the geraniums, red ones that smelt of pepper when you crushed a leaf. Marit kept the lilies, white ones with throats speckled like a thrush's egg, grown in the cold room where the light came through a crack in the shutter.

The quarrel was over a jar. Nobody living remembers which of them began it, but the jar held the last true seed of the pale lily, and Ysolde wanted it planted in the sun while Marit wanted it kept dark. So the jar sat on a shelf between them for eleven years, and the two of them walked round it like it was a sleeping dog.

Then the spring the river froze solid, a boy came up the ridge with a fever and a sack of wet bulbs he had dug out of a drowned orchard. He could not say whose they were. Marit took one look and went to the cold room. Ysolde went to the south wall. By dusk they were both on their knees in the same mud, and neither said a word about the jar, because the jar had never been the point.

Careful now, that's the bit that wants the poker. The jar is still on that shelf, and if you go and ask the keepers which seed it holds, they will each tell you the other one's name first.
