Blue butterfly tattoo on the top of a foot
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A butterfly with bright turquoise and violet wings, edged in dark purple with speckled detail, sits on the top of a bare foot. The wings are shaded to look raised off the skin, with a soft cast shadow beneath them. The foot rests on a grey stone surface, with a second foot visible at the right edge of the frame.

Dear Ruth,

I nearly didn't come to the reunion, but then I found the box in Dad's loft, the one with his old butterfly collection, and the blue one was still there under its glass, wings open like a hand. You remember he taught Biology at Hollins Road for thirty years and took us out to the nettle patch behind the bike sheds every summer with a jam jar. You were the only one who never screamed when the net came down.
Those wings were the colour of the swimming pool tiles at the baths on Quarry Lane, that electric turquoise that goes almost black at the edges, and the purple rim was flecked with gold as if someone had flicked a paintbrush at it. Dad always said the trick of that butterfly was that it wasn't blue at all. No pigment, just the way light broke on tiny ridges in the scales. I didn't believe him until I held the frame up to the kitchen window and watched the colour shift every time I moved.
So I'm bringing it on Saturday. Don't laugh. I know the school hall will smell of floor polish and that Mr Pratt will still be running the raffle badly. I thought we could find the nettle patch together and let the thing go, if the car park hasn't swallowed it. Meet me at the old gate at ten, and bring your own jar.
Love, Jen
