Realistic cat eye and blue flower on forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm tattoo showing a cat's face, with whiskers, a greenish eye and fur shaded in browns, reds and greys. The right side of the design is a large blue flower with layered petals that meet the cat's face along a sharp vertical edge. The rendering is smooth and detailed, set against a dark shaded background that fades into the surrounding skin.

The cloakroom at the Palais smelled of wet wool and violet talc, and Irene had given up hoping the tabby would stay out of the coats. She found him each Saturday asleep in the pocket of Walter's overcoat, curled round a cornflower he had been carrying since the spring fair. Walter was the caretaker's brother and had never once asked a girl to dance, so the flower had become a private joke between them, pinned to the lapel and left there for the cat to guard.

On the night the band from Ramsgate failed to turn up, the hall filled anyway. Irene stood at the edge of the floor with a tray of lemonade and watched the light from the mirror ball split across the walls, half gold and half in shadow, the way it always did when the stage curtain was drawn only halfway. The cat came down the back stairs with his ears flat and his eyes narrowed to slits, looking at the crowd as if someone had offered him an insult.
Walter found her by the urn. He said nothing about the band. He only took the cornflower from his lapel, turned it between finger and thumb, and asked whether she would rather have the lamplit side of the room or the dark. She said the dark, because the dark was where the cat would go. He laughed, and the tabby, which had followed them out, sat down between their feet and regarded the pair of them with one eye open and one eye on the door.
