Realistic big cat face on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large, detailed portrait of a spotted cat's face, possibly a leopard or snow leopard, with dark rosettes across the forehead and cheeks. The fur is rendered with soft shading and fine whisker lines, and the eyes and nose have strong highlights. The muted brown, grey and black palette fades into a dark, smoky background at the top and bottom of the design.

Marrow had been born under the glacier in the third winter after the lowland grids failed, and she had never once set a paw on bare rock. Ilse had fed her every dusk for six years, learning the set of her ears the way other people learned a language. The council wanted a clean release, a line in the ledger that said the species was back in the hills. Ilse had written the report twice. Both times she had struck out the word success.

At the lip of the hatch Marrow stopped. She lowered her head, whiskers stiff with frost, and looked not at the mountains but at Ilse, the way she looked at the feeding bucket. Her breath clouded and cleared, clouded and cleared. Ilse counted eleven breaths before she understood that the cat was not afraid of the snow. She was waiting for someone to go first.

Ilse stepped out onto the ice, her boots sinking to the ankle. The cold bit at her cheeks. Marrow padded past her, tail low, and vanished into the white without looking back. Ilse stood a long while in the falling flakes, then took the pencil from behind her ear and wrote one word in the box marked outcome, the only true word she had: walked.
