Realistic lion and chain on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A detailed lion's head with a full mane fills the upper arm, with its gaze turned to the left and its mouth slightly open. A metal chain wraps beneath the jaw and ends in a padlock at the bottom of the design. Soft shading in browns, ochres and amber gives the fur and eyes depth, while the chain and padlock are rendered in greys against the darker background of the skin.

You learn early that the key lives on a nail above the bread tin, beside the pepper and the cook's ledger, and that nobody aboard the Marigold touches it but you. Forty-one days out of Liverpool, Mr Abel Greaves, who keeps the menagerie, goes down with fever in his cabin, and the lion in the forward hold becomes your responsibility along with the potatoes. The bills of lading call him Specimen Four. The crew call him Samson.

Every evening you carry a bucket of mutton scraps down the ladder, past the coils of rope and the sour smell of wet straw, and he watches you come with those amber eyes. His chain runs from a collar to a ring bolted into the oak, and the padlock hangs at the end of it, grey and heavy, its stamped number worn half away. You have never once seen him pull against it. He lowers his great head to eat, and the mane falls across the iron like a curtain.
On the fortieth night the sea turns, and the key jumps off its nail and skitters under the stove. You crawl after it with a candle, burning your fingers on the hot iron, and when you stand again the ship is rolling so hard the pans swing on their hooks. You stop at the hold door with the key warm in your palm. Samson is not looking at you. He is looking at the padlock, the way a man looks at a letter he has already read.
In the morning you open it. The shackle springs free without a fight, because it was never threaded through the links at all. Greaves had only ever kept it closed on air. Samson rises, shakes out his mane, and climbs the ladder into the wind. You follow him up with the key still in your hand, because somebody has to ask a lion where he means to go, and he is already walking towards the rail.
