Dear Ada, you will not believe what Mrs Pargeter did at the Michaelmas fair. She came up to the stall with her good grey coat buttoned to the chin and asked Mr Holloway for a new cat, because the old one had gone off into the hedgerow last spring and never come home. He told her he had no cats, only the dog and the dray horse, so she went away muttering about thieves. Then on Saturday Tom Barlow found the thing in the lane, half-starved and nothing but eyes and whisker, and carried it up to the church hall in his cap.

I went to see it myself, for I cannot resist a fuss. It was a tabby, thin as a rake, with one ear torn and a green eye so bright it looked lit from inside. Mrs Pargeter took one look and wept into her handkerchief, which I have never once seen her do, not even at her husband's funeral.
