Realistic eye tattoo on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large eye sits across the forearm, with a detailed iris, a bright highlight on the lid and long, feathered lashes. Soft shading and fine, streaky strokes build the fur-like texture around the eye, which fades into the skin at the edges. The image is a close, straight-on photograph in black ink and greys with a plain, neutral background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sheep at Halden had been short by one every morning for a week, and the old women said it was the wood looking out of its own head again. Brenna Tull took the lantern and went to see for herself, though her mother begged her not to, and she reached the oak at the bottom of Cutter's Lane just as the mist lifted off the ditch.

The eye was set into the bark at the height of a man's shoulder, wide and dark and rimmed with lashes as long as reeds. The fur around it moved when the lantern moved, as if the trunk were breathing under a pelt. It did not blink. Brenna held the light up and the bright spot on the lid caught it, a small wet star, and she understood that it had been looking at her since she left the road.

'You have taken one of my ewes,' she said, because her grandmother had taught her that the wood answered to plain speech. 'And you will take more, and the village will hang the lot of us for it.' The eye narrowed slowly. It did not speak, but the wind in the oak did, and what it said was that the village had cut its way into the wood for three generations and never once asked whose eye it was looking through. Brenna thought of her father's axe and the stumps along the lane. She took off her shawl and hung it over the lowest branch, facing the lamps of Halden. 'Then look at what you have made,' she said. 'Look at it properly.'

In the morning there were forty-one ewes in the fold and frost on every blade along the lane. The shawl was still on the branch, stiff with rime, and in the bark beneath it someone had scratched a second pair of lashes, long and feathered, as if the wood had decided to keep watch from closer to home.
