Realistic eye tattoo on the back of a hand
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A large realistic eye sits across the back of a hand, with a highlight reflected in the pupil and fine lashes above. Dense, textured shading around the eye suggests fur or feathers, and the rendering is soft and detailed. The ink is grey and black against the skin tone, with script partly visible above the wrist and short letters on the knuckles, all framed against a dark background.

Dear Nell,

We are three weeks out of Falmouth and the owl has not left the foremast yet. It came aboard in the dark off the Azores, a barn owl with feathers the colour of dust on a church step, and it has sat on the fore-topsail yard ever since, turning its head to follow whoever climbs past. Cook says it is bad luck. Mr Penhallow says it is the best lookout we carry, because it hears the bosun's pipe before the bosun does.
It is the eye that I cannot leave alone. In daylight it is black as wet slate, and after dark it takes the lantern light and holds it like a coin at the bottom of a well. I have started drawing it on the back pages of the logbook when the watch is slow. Each time I try to get the feathers to fall around the eye properly, the whole face of the thing comes out staring back at me, and I cannot stop, because it is the only creature aboard that never once looks away from the sea.
Last Tuesday the swell rose hard off the Bay and we lost two hands to the rigging in one watch. Penhallow sat with the owl on the yard all night, and when the grey came up, it was still there, its eye on the horizon, as if it had been keeping count. We made landfall off Madeira this morning.
This afternoon it lifted off the yard and flew low over the water towards the coast, and it did not look back. I suppose that is what a good lookout does when the watch is done. I have pressed one of its feathers between the logbook pages for the day we reach Bristol. Write to me at the agency in Rio and tell Father I have not been eaten by owls.
Your brother, Tom
