Realistic feather on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic feather runs diagonally across the skin, with its quill curving up towards the top of the frame and its vane fanning out below. The barbs are rendered with soft grey and pale blue-grey shading, with highlights along the quill and a faint drop shadow beneath the feather that gives it a three-dimensional look. The plain skin and dark, blurred background keep the focus on the tattoo.

Sit nearer, the fire is low and my knees are older than this valley. No, not that one, the grey one. You want the feather that came down at the foot of Mount Ossa the spring the river ran backwards. Hush, then.

A courier pigeon called Ardis had been sent from the coast with a wax tablet tied under one wing, carrying a single line for the tyrant's ear: the grain ships were lying. She flew three days over the ridges, and on the third a hawk came out of a cloud the colour of wet slate. Ardis dropped and turned, and the hawk took only a long pale feather from her tail as they parted. The feather spun down through the pines, its grey fading to blue at the tip, and landed on the goat track where old Pelagia was milking her black goat.
Pelagia picked it up and saw how the quill curled upward, as if it still wanted the sky. She tucked it into her bodice, because a feather is good luck to anyone who keeps it dry, and then she walked to the coast herself. The tablet never arrived, so the grain ships sailed on, and the tyrant starved in his own granary with his doors barred against nothing but his own fear.
Ah, you think that is the lesson. It is not. Pelagia kept the feather until she was too old to climb the track, and when she died they laid it on her chest, and it was buried with her. Still, in spring, the wind brings a feather down that same path, its shadow lying beneath it on the stones, if you have eyes to see it. Now bank the fire, and mind the goat.
