Realistic gas mask on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a gas mask with two round, mottled lenses and a large circular filter at the centre of the face. Smooth shading and fine highlights give the rubber surface a three-dimensional, photographic look, with heavier black areas around the edges. The mask fills most of the frame, and the dark, reflective background keeps the focus on the design.

Dear Nell, the fair came through Hartlepool on Tuesday, and I'm sorry I didn't write sooner, but Mr Coyle has us on the dodgems until the lights go out and the generator sulks like an old dog. You'll laugh, but the thing I think of most is the shooting gallery stall at the far end, where the old man keeps a rubber respirator on a hook beside the tin ducks. He says it came back from the Western Front in his brother's kit bag and nobody in the family would touch it after. Its two round eyes are cloudy as pond water, and the big filter sits in the middle like a beetle that's decided to stay.

Yesterday a boy from the rides asked if he could try it on for a penny. The old man said a penny was too cheap for a thing that had breathed in a gas cloud, so the boy paid him a whole shilling he'd won at the coconut shy. I watched him stand there breathing through that dead rubber, his own face gone strange and small, and I thought of your father at the sorting office with his scarf wound up to the nose. Nobody told that boy what the mask was for. He just stood still and listened to himself breathe.

When he took it off his hair was flat with sweat and he was grinning like he'd been let in on a secret. The old man wiped the lenses with his thumb and hung it back up beside the ducks, where the light from the lamps catches the rim and makes it look wet. I'll tell you more when I see you at the Easter fair. Keep the kettle on. Your loving sister, Win.
