Mags had been painting eyes for the Harrowgate Travelling Fair since the spring the lorries first rolled onto the common, and she still got the iris wrong one time in three. The trick, her uncle said, was to stop looking at the eye and start looking at the light trying to get in. He had painted the big board of faces above the coconut shy for thirty years, and he could lay down a grey-green like wet slate in four strokes without mixing a thing.

The generator coughed, the waltzer slowed to a groan, and in the sudden dark the only light came from the paraffin lamp hung off her easel. She leaned close to the wet paint, a single pale highlight still to place, and found her hand steady for once. The dot went in just above the pupil, the way her uncle had shown her, and the whole eye seemed to lift off the board and look straight through the tent flap.

Next morning the man from the council came to close the site, and he stopped in front of the panel longer than he needed to. He asked who had painted it. Mags said nobody famous, just a girl from the cookhouse. He nodded at the eye as if it had told him something. 'It's watching the gate,' he said, paid his fee in coppers, and walked off towards the lorries without looking back.
