Eye in ornate heart frame

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A realistic eye with a blue-green iris and long lashes sits within a glowing red heart. The heart is outlined by ornate gold scrollwork, and a row of black dotted drips hangs from its base. Bold outlines, smooth red and gold shading and a vivid teal iris give the piece a rich, saturated finish on a limb photographed against a white cloth.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last tent had stars in its roof, and the rain came down through them onto the sawdust while Dora Lark counted lamps. Nine. When her grandfather drove the first wagon out of Wakefield there had been ninety, and a painted heart on every banner, and a rule that the heart must never be left in the dark.

The heart was red as a fresh cut, edged in gold scrolls that curled like bread in an oven, with an eye set in its middle. Samuel Vane had painted it in a hard winter, so the story went, and he had taken the eye from his own wife, who had gone to sea and never come back to see what he made of her. The crowds said the eye followed them round the ring. It did not, Dora knew, but people felt it following, and they paid their pennies to be looked at.

Now the crowds came in ones and twos, and the black drips hung from the banner like the beads of an unfinished rosary. On the last night a boy stood at the gate with a farthing in his fist and asked whether the show was closing. Dora said yes. He asked whether the eye would still be watching after. She said it would.

She unpinned the banner when the boy had gone and folded it with the heart turned inward, so the eye saw only the dark of the cloth. Then she carried it out past the lamps into the field, where the rain had grown tired of falling.
