Roaring lion wearing a crown

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A lion with its mouth open in a roar, wearing an ornate crown with a cross finial on top. The mane and fur are built up with fine, directional pencil-like strokes, and shading is used to model the face and crown. The image is in greyscale on a white background, with the lion's head and crown filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lion had not roared in nine winters, so when his crown slipped down over one ear the meadow assumed he was ill rather than bored. Old Brannoc the cooper said as much over the wall, and the sun, which had always waited for the roar before it climbed the hill, stayed under the blanket of the valley. By four in the morning the frost on the bakery step was thick enough to write in, and Mirela, who kept the ovens at the bottom of the lane, found a lion sitting on her doorstep with his tail wrapped round his paws like a cat outside a dairy.

"You're letting the flour out," she said, holding the door open with her hip. He looked at her with the patience of something that had been king for a long time and had not been asked a question in years. He opened his mouth to answer and nothing came out but a dry rattle, like a cart over gravel. The crown tipped further down his brow. Mirela sighed, went back inside, and returned with a loaf still hot enough to steam in the cold.

"Roaring is only hunger with the lid off," she told him, breaking the crust so the smell rolled out across the step. "You've been eating nothing but your own pride. Eat this first." He ate it in three bites, crumbs catching in the mane, and then he stood, filled his chest the way a bellows fills, and let go. The sound went up the hill and over the rooftops, and somewhere behind the far ridge a pale line appeared.

The crown came loose on the last note and landed in a sack of rye, where it sat with its little cross pointing at the rafters. Mirela did not pick it up. She set a tray of rolls in the oven, and when the sun finally cleared the hill, the lion was asleep on the step with his head in the warm air from the vent, and the crown was still in the flour, leaving a perfect ring in the dust.
