Realistic lion portrait on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large lion portrait fills the upper arm, showing the head, a full flowing mane and the top of the chest and shoulder area. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft greys in the fur and sharp highlights around the eyes and nose. The image is composed as a close crop of the arm, with the lion's gaze turned slightly to the side.

Don't look him in the eye, the old keeper told the boy, not yet. Solomon had been the Carrick Brothers' finest hunter since before the boy was born, and he had learned that a stare was a challenge. So they walked past his cage at dusk with their heads turned, watching the mane instead, which hung about his shoulders like wet smoke from the Pennine rain.

He never looked at the crowds, the keeper said. Not once in six seasons of market fields. His head was always turned to the left, past the tent poles and the dripping canvas, to where the railway cutting ran south towards Leeds. The boy asked what he was watching for, and the keeper shrugged and said some animals just know which way home is, even when home burned down in Hull with everyone they had ever loved inside it.
The keeper had sat with him through that first grey winter, when the lion would not eat the horse meat and only drank from the trough when nobody was near. He talked to him about nothing. The price of coal, a dog that had once bitten a vicar. Slowly the great head came round, not to the keeper, but a fraction closer to the bars, and the keeper understood that Solomon was not waiting to be fed or freed. He was simply tired of being looked at as the show.
In March the cage was found empty, its latch lifted neatly with a claw. The boy found a single tuft of mane caught on the splintered gate, and out in the wet field a pale shape was loping calmly towards the cutting, not once looking back at the tents.
