Realistic lion tattoo across the back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large lion tattoo with its head turned slightly to the side, showing a full mane and a raised paw at the lower edge. The work uses smooth, blended shading in black and grey, with strong contrast on the face and darker tones in the mane. The lion fills the centre of the frame across the back, with a plain skin background and a blurred room visible at the right.

The lift at Harrow Point had been dead since Tuesday, so Nadia Okafor carried the shopping up nine flights with the bag handles cutting into her fingers. Someone had drawn a lion on the ninth-floor wall in biro, the mane a scribble of loops and the paw lifted as if it wanted a turn at the queue for the bins.

Mr Pell, the caretaker, was on the landing with a tin of matt black and a brush with a bent ferrule. He had once painted fascias on the docks, and he didn't like a lion done in ballpoint. He worked slowly, pulling the mane out in long strokes, shading the cheek until the animal seemed to have weight behind its face. He had turned its head so it watched the car park rather than the stairwell.
"It's meant to be looking at something," Nadia said, shifting the bag to her other hip.
"It's looking at whatever's coming," he said, not turning round. "Lions watch the edge of the herd. That's the job." He tapped the raised paw with the brush handle. "That one's for the lift men. Tells them to wait."
The lift men came on the second Monday and fixed it in an afternoon, and the notices came down. The lion stayed. Nadia noticed it each time she came up the stairs, the black paint still wet-looking under the strip light, and each time she thought of the paw held up in the stairwell air. On the eleventh-floor landing a boy was sitting on the step, waiting for someone to come home, and she nodded to him as she passed. Then she pressed the lift button anyway, out of habit, and the doors slid open with a sigh.
