Bull head with chain on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A bull's head with a ring through its nose and a chain hanging below it, shown in profile with a fierce, narrowed eye. The bull is rendered in grey shading with smooth gradients, while the curved horns and the chain's shadow area carry warm red and yellow colour. The tattoo fills most of the calf, with the horn curving up toward the top of the frame against a wooden floor and a shoe in the background.

Dear Tomas,

The bull is out again, and this time it has taken the chain with it. You will not believe the sound it made pulling free of the gatepost, like a bell cracking in the cold. Father says the iron ring in its nose, hammered from an old wagon rim by his grandfather, is what keeps it honest. I have watched that ring for three summers, and I think the bull only wears it when it likes the company.
We have been living in the east wing since the roof went in March. The keep is mostly nettles now, and swallows nest in the bell frame of the chapel. Mother hangs the washing from a broken arrow slit, and the bull watches it from the moat bank with that narrow, yellow eye, as if it is counting every shirt. Last Tuesday it came up the stair to the solar, which no one has done since the old Earl's time, and stood in the doorway chewing the chain as though it were thinking.
I went up after it with the lantern. It did not charge. It only turned its great grey head and let me see the red at the base of its horns, the colour of old sealing wax, and I understood that it had been waiting for someone to notice it was not the thing tied up in the stable. Father would not understand that. He thinks a creature that breaks its chain must want to hurt you.
So I have unlocked the far gate and left a bucket of oats by the drawbridge. If the bull goes down into the valley, let it go. Come home at Michaelmas and we will walk up together and see what is left of the house, if the bull has left us any.
Yours in haste, Ellen
