Horse portrait and silhouette on a back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large horse head with a windswept mane fills the upper back, rendered in soft, smoky shading with lighter highlights along the mane. A solid black silhouette of a galloping horse sits low in the centre, creating strong contrast with the shaded portrait above. The piece uses only black and grey ink, and the composition is centred on the spine.

Before the church bell at Harrowby Cross, Tom Ashdown was already short of wood. The ovens in Mill Lane wanted feeding by four, and the flour cart had lost a wheel to the frost. Old Bess, the grey mare who had hauled for his father, stood in the yard with her head low, her mane gone the colour of ash and tangled from the wind off the moor.

Tom said he would fetch the wood from the copse himself. Bess lifted her head and blew once through her nose, and he saw that the yard lamp had thrown her shadow long across the cobbles, and that the shadow was not standing still. It was running, legs reaching, out under the arch and up the lane toward the dark of the trees.
He followed it because there was nothing else to do with his hands. At the copse the shadow stopped beside a fallen ash and waited, patient as a horse at a gate. Tom split the dry limbs and loaded the barrow, and when he looked up the shadow had already turned for home, pale at its edges, galloping ahead of him down the lane.
By the time he reached the ovens the fire had caught on its own, the dough was rising under its cloths, and Bess stood by the door with her coat steaming. Tom never asked how she had got there first. Now he leaves the heel of the first loaf on the sill each morning, and each morning it is gone before the sun clears the moor, leaving a pale dusting of flour on the step in the shape of hooves.
