Compass and white flowers on the upper back
Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo
A black compass rose sits at the centre of the design, with two white five-petalled flowers with green centres above and below it. Soft watercolour-style washes in purple, blue, teal and pink surround the compass and flowers, with the black linework kept crisp against the lighter fills. The tattoo covers much of the upper back, shown from a close angle.

You are halfway up the broken stair when the wind finds the gap in the keep wall and sets the lantern swinging. Below, the sea is a black sheet, and the old chart Mother Ysolde gave you is damp at the corners, its compass rose inked in iron-gall so faded that only the points still show. She said the castle was built to face the northern star, that every window was cut so a man could sight it from the battlements. You have counted eleven windows. None of them lines up.

The white flowers pressed in the chart's margin are the reason you climbed at all. Ysolde's sister picked them on the cliff path the spring before the roof fell in, and wrote beside them that they open only where the ground is older than the walls. You kneel on the flagstones and brush away the lichen until a ring of pale stone shows, grooved with a star. Your fingers catch in the grooves. Something green and cold is seeping through the cracks, purple where the moss is thick and teal where the spray has reached.
You set the compass on the stone and the needle spins, then stops, pointing not north but straight down through the floor, toward the cellar where the old tide-wells lie. The needle, you realise, has been pointing at the castle's heart all along. You lever up the flag with the chart-knife. Beneath it lies a pool of starlight the size of a cartwheel, and in its centre a second compass rose, black as a hole, with two white blossoms floating on the water like lamps.
You take one flower, tuck it behind your ear, and turn your back on the north. The lantern gutters out. Behind you, through the ruined walls, the windows finally line up.
