Realistic rose with leaves on a shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large, detailed rose with soft pink, cream and yellow petals sits on the upper back near the shoulder blade, surrounded by dark green leaves. The petals are shaded with smooth gradients and subtle highlights to give a three-dimensional look. The flower is centred in the frame, with the subject photographed from behind and the head turned away.

Mind the step, it's loose, same as my knee. Come in out of the wind and shut that door proper, the glasshouse won't hold its heat for the likes of you letting the draught in. There. Now look at the bench by the boiler. That's where Walter Pell kept the pale rose in the winter of nineteen fifty-one, a single cutting wrapped in wet newspaper and tucked under a tea towel, because he'd been told it would never take.

Everyone said it was a sport, a freak off the old Albertine stock, cream going to pink at the edges like a bruise going the other way. Walter didn't care what they said. He sat up nights with a candle and a penknife, binding the graft with raffia and talking to it the way you'd talk to a nervous horse. The frost came on the twelfth of February and split two panes clean through, and he went out in his nightshirt and boots to stand between the cold and that bench until the sun was up.
The rose lived. Forty years on it still comes up in the north bed every June, and the leaves go that deep green you only get from a plant that has been fought for. Walter's gone now. The nursery's been sold, and the new owners want it turned into a car park, which I told them would be over my dead body, and I meant every word.
So when you see one of those pale roses in a shop window, you'll know it started on a cold bench, under a tea towel, with an old fool talking to it. Now pass me that jar and mind the glass.
