Mags Dunning, who cooked for us and painted our names on the bow in red lead, swore the bird was watching the river for her husband, drowned off the weir the year before. Nobody argued. You didn't argue with Mags. She'd tip a pan of onions over your boots as soon as look at you.

Then came the night the fog sat down on the water like wet wool. Young Eli Marsh was at the tiller, half asleep, and the lamp had gone out. The owl dropped off the roof with a sound like a wet sheet being shaken, one wing spread wide across the glass, and it screeched once. Eli had the sense to look up. Watch out, Mags called from the hatch, and she said it the way she said everything, as if the words were already painted on something.

Eli hauled the tiller hard. The bow swung past the black lip of the weir, where the water slides off like oil. When the fog lifted the owl was gone, and a single feather lay on the cabin roof, grey as ash. Mags pinned it above the stove, and it's still there, though the varnish has gone yellow. I look up whenever a grey shape crosses the lamp light, and so should you lot, especially with that kettle on.
